Ghana Needs Over 5bn Dollars To Tackle Drainage Problems…. Works And Housing Minister

The Honourable Minister of Works and Housing, Hon Asenso Boakye has told journalists that the country needs more than 5 billion dollars to fix the intractable drainage problem in the country. Speaking to journalists at the information ministry at the Minister’s Press Briefing , to inform them of the going ons in his ministry. He said that earlier assessors put the figure at 5bn but with passage of time the figure certainly has changed . He disclosed that a lot has been achieved in the. area of drainage and sea defence projects . He gave chronology of ongoing drainage projects in various parts of Accra and some parts of the country.

He said its the duty of the District assemblies to check and control illegal structures and buildings to avoid the perennial flooding in Ghana

He however asserted that as a result of social, and cultural hindrances the assemblies are seriously handicapped to address the problems head on. He intimated that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo is an action man who wants to tackle the flooding problems decicisevely and his ministry is more than determined to rise to the occasion.

The minister admitted that the government alone cannot deal with the flooding issue as the country’s finances cannot meet the exigency of the situation. He therefore called on donor partners and development partners to come in to support the Government to fix the issues of flooding. The minister advised citizens to refrain from building in water ways, lowlands and wetlands to avoid the unwanted situation.

The minister spoke about the housing situation in the country which had caught the attention of the government. There are efforts to fix it in different ways the Minister added.
