Speaking with Nii Armah Okropong Shikpootse, Chief of Joma, he gave Kessben news a history behind Joma and its natural resources. According to him, Joma formally known as ‘’Aryee ma’’ was originated from ‘’Gye wu ba” where Nii Aryee their ancestors and founder of the land married a woman from the Fante clan who bore him a child, but at a point in time had to separate from her, so in the process of returning the child to the mother ‘’gye wu ba’’ came to stay as Joma.
Nii Armah Okropong Shikpootsee disclosed that their land is the best place for tourism in Greater Accra since their land is rich in natural resources. Explaining further into their history and resources, he mentioned that aside the river, stones and forest in their land they also have a stone called ‘’kikawotse’’ who since found has been filled with water and never went dry. According to him, ‘’kikawotse’’ performs miracles for anyone who uses it. (such as healing, cleansing, children etc). He said ‘’we believe this is from God hence whoever believes in it and uses it, it does miraculous things for them.
The acting head of the Ayi Quaye family, Nii Ayi-Quaye also mentioned that, mentioned that, government to promote tourism in Accra, they decided to expand the river in as much as it will be used for tourism, Densu also helps in serving the nation water. He also mentioned that, river Densu and its environs attracts some movie industries to shoot their films which also helps in promoting the town and also gives income to the government.
Adding to this, Nii Armah Okropong Shikpootsee says government asked for 100meters to plant trees around Densu as a measure to protect the river, however government compensated them for the land given to them. But the environment has been destroyed hence the beauty and the role the river plays is no longer relevant. He is therefore pleading with government and investors to help in developing the land. He said ‘’we need hospitals, art centers, schools, etc on our lands, we therefore call on all to come support to help development the land’’.
