NDC's BT Baba wins Talensi by-election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, B.T. Baba has been elected Member of Parliament for the Talensi Constituency in the Upper East Region.
BT Baba polled 10,366, representing 42.31% of the total votes cast, against Thomas Duanab’s (NPP) 6,845 representing 27.94% of the total votes.

PNC candidate Wombeoto Namailteng garnered 6,836 representing 27.90% of the total votes cast followed by the PPP which had 214 votes representing 0.87%. The GFP polled 58 votes, NVP had 93, UPP managed 49 while the IPP polled a paltry 38.

According to official figures from the Electoral Commission, total valid votes cast were 24,499, rejected votes were 882 while the votes cast were 25,381 representing 64.22% of total turn-out.

This means the ruling party has added additional muscle to its overwhelming parliamentary supremacy. The seat was until 2012 occupied by the NDC.

Both parties – NDC and NPP – had said the election provided them the opportunity to test their strength and strategies ahead of the 2016 elections.

NPP’s Gabby Otchere Darko took to Twitter to congratulate the NDC candidate tweeting: ‘ Congrats BT Baba of NDC for winning the Talensi by-election. NDC takes back its traditional stronghold’.
