Roche Products Ghana Ltd, GMA and Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons partner to establish Medical Oncology training in Ghana
Roche Products Limited, in collaboration with the Ghana Medical Association and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, have selected four Ghanaian medical doctors to undergo specialty training in Medical Onchology in Nairobi, Kenya.
This is part of efforts to commence Medical Oncology training in Ghana.
The total cost of the training was not disclosed , the full cost would be borne by the three partners, including tuition fees, living expenses, air tickets, and insurance.
The MOU to kickstart the collaboration was signed at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra on the 3rd of May 2024 .
It was signed by Dr. Kgothatso Motumi, the General Manager of Roche Produts Ghana Ltd, Dr. (Med) Frank Serebour, The President of the Ghana Medical Association and the Rector of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons Prof Richard Adanu.
It is envisaged that beneficiaries on their return would serve as faculty to set up the local training of Medical Oncologists in Ghana.
The training of the specialists would improve access to quality cancer care, reduce the incidence of ghanaians travelling to other countries to get care, improve outcomes and contibute to medical tourism.
Dr. Motumi, expressed the commitment of Roche to continue to collaborate with stakeholders to improve care healthcare even as they pursue they pursue their business interests. She promised to ensure the training of the specialists is suported as planned.
The President of GMA and the Rector of the College on their part, expressed their delight about the collaboration and the prospects it holds for many patients suffering various cancers and the quality of cancer care in Ghana.
They expressed appreciation to Roche Products Ghana Limited for their kind gesture of footing majority of the costs for the training and pledged to ensure Medical Oncology training is established to serve the country and sub-region.
Meanwhile, all arrangements have been finalised for the smooth take-off of the programme. Beneficiaries are therefore expected to start training in the second half of 2024 in Nairobi.
Medical oncology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer.
