Labour Expert Benjamin Arthur Calls On ECOWAS To Totally Ban coup d’états

Leadership is the ability to inspire people to follow your instructions voluntarily and manage the completion of a project without exercising any form of force. Traditionally, it was believed that power was derived from leadership. In Africa, a leader is viewed as someone who is servant to the clan, tribe, community or group. In other words, African people treat a leader by virtue of being a king, priest or ruler chosen by virtue of the office in order to serve the nation.

Leaders are been chosen through votes, competence, etc. Politically we select our leaders through the ballot box however, some political leaders use the wrong means to attain power. Today on the Amansan ntie show on Kessben fm with Omanhene and his panellist where they discussed African Leadership, Mr. Benjamin Arthur , a labour expert said we have been controlled by some leaders in the ancient times but now politically we have our independence to a large extent and our political leadership has evolved.

He stated that some leaders in African countries gain their power or leadership through war and other means and all these where been informed by a certain practice which is, refusing to step down after serving their terms in the country hence influences people to use other means to overthrow them. He mentioned that, the late former president, Jerry John Rawlings during his regime in the year 1979 stepped down but learnt his lessons and was not ready to hand over hence he stood for elections and was voted for. ”It is about time we band Coup D’états in African countries and our constitutive act and protocol bodies on governance and leadership must be changed and the laws that governs freedom in ECOWAS should be amended” he said.
