9,000 teachers fail 2023 teacher licensure exam, representing 47.4%, failure rate

9,556 applicants who attempted to pass the second part of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination were not able to receive the necessary passing score to be approved as professional teachers in Ghana. This statistic corresponds to 47.4% failure rate of all applicants who took the professional test.

However, 10, 625 candidates—or 52.6% of the total—passed the test and will receive the necessary certification to work as professional teachers in the nation.

The National Teaching Council, responsible for administering the test, has frequently faced censure due to the elevated percentage of exam failure. However, the organization has asserted that the integrity of the test is maintained and that each candidate is evaluated equitably.

In accordance with the law, the NTC started investigating and licensing teachers in 2018.
