Kessben University College Goes Online During COVID-19 and Beyond

The Government of Ghana, through the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), directed all universities to stop face-to-face learning due to the spread of COVID-19. In response, Kessben University College quickly moved all academic work online to keep teaching and learning going.
Mr. Abubakr Siddique Muntaka, a Lecturer at school of physical sciences, and the University’s IT Manager and Chief Technologist, led the project towards migrating all university systems and eLearning platform for the university. Working with the IT team including Mr. Benjamin Ofosu Asiamah and Mr. Manasseh K. Adjei, they set up secure cloud systems and software to allow students and lecturers to connect from home.
Two main online platforms were used: elearning.kc.edu.gh and vclass.kc.edu.gh. These platforms made it possible for students to attend lectures, do assignments, and take tests. The team also used open-source video tools like BigBlueButton and Jitsi Meet to support live online classes.
The Chancellor of the University and founder of Kessben Group, Mr. Stephen Boateng (Mr. Kesse), praised the team for their fast and effective work. He said the move showed that Kessben University was ready for the future of education.
GTEC’s statement on March 15, 2020, confirmed that all universities in Ghana, public and private, must close classrooms and switch to online and distance learning to help stop the spread of the covid virus. Kessben University College was one of the first private universities in Ghana to go fully online. The move helped protect students’ health while making sure they could continue their education.
