MoH receives medical equipment from German govt
The Ministry of Health (MoH) has received medical equipment and consumables valued at €373,000 from the German government to support healthcare in the country.
The items include 45 ventilators and 5,000 pulse oximeters, a device that measures the amount of oxygen carried in the blood.
The German International Development Agency (GIZ), presented the equipment to the ministry in Accra yesterday.
A Deputy Minister of Health, Ms. Tina Mensah, received the items from the Deputy Head of Mission, German Embassy, Mr. Hans-Helge Sander and expressed gratitude to the German government for the gesture.
She acknowledged that since March last year when Ghana recorded its first COVID-19 cases, Germany had been of assistance through the GIZ.
“We really appreciate every support; we look forward to continue this relationship,” she said
Mr. Sander said the gesture formed part of Germany’s effort to strengthen the health systems of its partner countries.
He said the global health systems were experiencing extraordinary times in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, saying “even countries with well-equipped infrastructure have not been spared”.
“With recent reports showing a rise in active COVID-19 cases, it appears a third wave is inevitable.
“The current vaccination rate on the African continent calls for emergency preparedness measures and providing health facilities with infrastructure and personnel during and after the pandemic,” he said.
Mr. Sander said his outfit would facilitate the training of the staff who would operate the ventilators in beneficiary hospitals for the effective and efficient use of the equipment, with the German government funding the exercise.
“For the maintenance of the equipment, we expect biomedical engineers in the beneficiary hospitals to be trained as well,” he added.
He pledged his outfit’s continuous support for the country.The German government is proud of its long-lasting history of partnership and cooperation with Ghana,” Mr. Sander said.
