Fear grips onion sellers in Ghana over shortage due to Niger coup, a bag which sold at GHC1000 now GHC1300

Following the coup in Niger, Ghanaian traders worry that there would be a shortage of onions.

According to the Ghanaian Onion Sellers Association, about 70% of their onions come from Niger.

Due to the coup against President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, 2023, truckloads of onions were impounded at Ghana’s northern border.

The Accra Onion Importer Association’s president, Sani Abubakar, predicted that onion prices would rise sharply and possibly create a shortage.

Previously marketed for GH 1000 cedis, a bag of onions is now offered for between GH 1300 and GH 25,000.
