Tafo Bloody Clash: Ashanti Regional Chief Imam Apologises
The Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheik Abdul Mummin has condemned violent attacks betweeen some zongo youth and the Tafo tradional council over a fencing of the tafo cemetery.
He says the Zongo youth had no business to go on rampage let alone assault the chief of the area and cause damage to properties. As a spiritual head of the muslim community,I should have been consulted by the leaders of the muslim community of the area so that we can all find an amicable soultion to the problem, it should not have escalated to this extent, he told Sammy Bee in an interview with Hello FM.
“I am therefore rendering an apology to the Tafo traditional council, members of the Tafo christian community and all those who have been affected by the violence. I am yet to meet leaders of the Tafo traditional council and all stakeholders involved to see how we can find a lasting solution to the problem. It is rather unfortunate that lives have been lost and properties have been destroyed. I will do everything within my power to ensure that both sides smoke the peace pipe” he added.
Meanwhile, a member of the Ashanti Regional Peace Council who doubles as the chairperson for the Ashanti Presbytery, Rev. kofi Amfo Akonnor, in an interview with Hello FM noted that, the Ashanti Regional Peace Council is yet to meet on the matter but however appealed to members of the christian community at Tafo to remain calm as they are doing everything within their power to ensure that peace prevails in the area.
Ashanti regional minster Honourable Peter Anarfi Mensah says residents of Tafo environs will continue to enjoy the curfew until the situation is brought under control. The Regional Security Council will be meeting periodically to assess the security situation of the area before the curfew can be reviewed.
He however asked members of the community to report any act of violence by any group of persons or residents that would mar the security and peace of the area. we are on high alert to ensure that it does not escalate to religious or ethnic violence.
