The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority caucus in Parliament has challenged government to publicly state how much funds have been spent on the National Sanitation exercise since it started ten (10) months ago.
The group wonders why government continues to expend the tax payers’ hard earned monies on an exercise which has woefully failed to rid the country of filth.
The Caucus argues that it appears the country by this exercise which is done the first Saturday of every month is suggesting to the citizenry that they should create as much filth as they can and use a day in the month to clear it.
Over the past one year, and in every month, the leadership of the Ministry of Local Government literally “abandon” the Ministry and go to observe the National Sanitation Day in a selected region. This has gone on for the past (10) months. The last in the series was held in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region.
The Minority Spokesperson on Local Governance and Rural Development, Kwesi Ameyaw Cheremeh, said the institution of the National Sanitation Day is an admission by the Ministry that the District Assemblies have failed in discharging their basic duty.
“Why should a Minister and his deputies re-locate to a region for almost two weeks in the name of awareness creation on environmental cleanliness and observance of sanitation practices. A wireless message attached to a letter inviting Members of Parliament (MPs) to participate in the Sunyani one tells it all – AS PART OF ITINERARY TWO WEEKS VISIT BY HONORABLE MINISTER, MINISTRY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN CONNECTION WITH 10Th NATIONAL SANITATION DAY IN THE BRONG AHAFO REGION, THERE WILL BE A BREAKFAST MEETING FOR THE BRONG AHAFO PARLIAMENTARY CAUCUS……”.
The Minority has therefore urged the government to devise effective ways ridding the country of filth as it promised in its manifesto in the run up to the 2008.
