Police ‘picket’ at EC against LMVCA picket
The Police have laid siege at the Electoral Commission in Accra to forestall any attempt by protesters of Let My Vote Count Alliance to disregard a court injunction against a planned picket.
Dozens of police officers can be seen walking about, chatting and generally unengaged at the premises of the EC.
Others were stationed at the Obra Spot at Circle where the demonstrators who want a new voters register had planned to converge.
A Circuit Court earlier on Monday declared that a restraining order obtained by the police against the planned picket at the vicinity of the Electoral Commission on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 had run its course.
To that extent, the protesters could go ahead with their picket unless the police obtained a fresh injunction on the protest. The Police rose up to the challenge and in a swift move obtained another injunction.
In a move described by a lawyer, Samson Lardy Anyenini, as mischievous and an abuse of the process, the Police went to a different Circuit Court to offer another set of reasons for an injunction.
The planned picket was effectively quashed. To enforce the injunction, the police on Tuesday morning drove into Obra Spot. It is believed that they are seeking to serve the injunction on the protesters for the benefit of any doubt.
Several Tundras lined up at Obra Spot full of policemen in full protective gear. But an hour later, the sense of vigilance drained away. The police were seen on their mobile phones while others loitered about.
