Recite Magna Carta daily to restore confidence – Deputy AG to court clerks
The Deputy Attorney General, Dominic Ayine has proposed that court clerks be made to recite Article 40 of Magna Carta to restore confidence in the judiciary system. Article 40 of Magna Carta mandates court clerks to deliver justice without delay:“To no one will we sell, to no one deny or delay right or justice.”
He believes judges and other court clerks “will remind themselves of the corrupting influence” they are susceptible to if they abide by the norm daily. “In order to restore judicial integrity where it is lacking in this simplistic form I have a proposition and it is this. I propose that you make it compulsory that every morning before your judges and court start working, they recite Article 40 of Magna Carta which read as follows: “To no one will we sell, to no one will we refuse or delay right or justice.” According to him, “any Judge, registrar , court clerk or bailiff” who fails to agree by the principle should be compelled to resign.
“The rule of law and access to justice cannot flourish in our society if those who man our judicial system lack moral and ethical integrity,” he added. His call comes days after investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas exposed corruption at the judiciary system. Some judges were captured receiving bribes from their clients on camera.
