New transport fares are set to be announced next week by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).
GPRTU’s General Secretary Stephen Okudzeto said the new fares will reflect projections of future increases.
Speaking to Accra-based Radio Gold on Thursday morning, Mr Okudzeto said that all required inputs such as vehicle insurance, lubricants, spare parts and other materials needed for running commercial vehicles have been factored into the new fares soon to be made public.
Mr Okudzeto said the announcement next week was awaiting the approval of usual protocols and processes required to announce new transport fares.
He revealed that the GPRTU was happy about the suspension of the recently announced hikes in insurance premiums, adding that while they are not against increases in insurance premiums, such increases should be reasonable because the cost would most likely be transferred to passengers.
Insurance operators had to back down on their decision to hike premiums by up to 800% after commercial drivers, transport unions and commuters rejected the hikes as unreasonable.
