ECG begins disconnection exercise in Ashanti Region

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected electricity supply to more than 200 homes and companies in the Ashanti Region.
The affected homes and institutions are said to owe ECG up to GHc92 million.
According to ECG’s Ashanti Regional Public Relations Manager, Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, the action formed part of a revenue mobilisation exercise to retrieve money owed by consumers.
Prior to the exercise, Mr Baidoo said, the ECG had served the affected individuals and institutions with notices but they failed to respond to the demand letters, which had forced the company to embark on the disconnection exercise.
Legal action
He further indicated that besides the disconnection, the company would take legal action to retrieve all the debts owed it by those customers.
The PRO advised consumers to avoid letting their electricity bills accumulate and asked them to always endeavour to pay the bills promptly to avoid the discomfort associated with disconnection and subsequent prosecution.
According to him, even though some educational and health institutions in the region also owed the company, they had not been disconnected because of the critical services they rendered to the public.
“We are engaging them on the terms of payment,” he explained.
Mr Baidoo said as a result of the huge indebtedness to the ECG, it was unable to pay its power producers and also ensure the regular maintenance of its equipment.
