The Peoples National Convention (PNC), is scheduled to resume merger talks with the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and other smaller political parties “with Nkrumahist tendencies” after the Christmas holidays.
The PNC was in talks with the CPP for a possible merger prior to the December 7general elections but the decision stalled due to closeness of the 2012 elections.
The PNC like all the other smaller political parties performed poorly in the just ended elections.
This has increased calls on smaller parties to join forces to contest in future elections to increase their chances of winning or make an impact.
In an interview with Citi News, the PNC’s National Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan explained saying, “at that time, we even started the negotiations but we realized that in the heat of the elections, if we move onto the merger before the elections, it may not turn out to be good for us.”
According to him, the two parties decided to put the discussions on hold and resume after the elections.
“So probably after the holidays, when the inauguration is done, we will reconvene the meeting to see the way forward for all of us, in fact not only PNC, CPP but all the other Nkrumahist tendencies who are ready and willing to join the discussion. We will bring them in and then we will see how best we present a united front,” He said.
