St Thomas SHS students in E/Region taking exams under canopies

Students at St Thomas Senior High School in Asamang Kesse in the Eastern Region are studying and taking crucial national exams under canopies, 25 years after the school’s inception.
The school’s headmistress Mrs Henrietta Anning Nartey pleaded with the government to make their school one of its priorities and help them put up some structures to lessen the burden on the Parent Teachers Association.
Some of the students also appealed to the government to come to their aid as those sitting for exams have to do so in an environment that is not conducive to putting forward their best performance. They added that it was unfair that their colleagues in other schools were taking their exams in comfort, yet both groups were expected to have similar outcomes.
President John Dramani Mahama has promised to remove all schools under trees.
He said: “We are working to remove all schools under trees. So we have built quite a number of them. Between now and 2016, we are hoping that we will be able to completely clear all the schools under trees.”
In 2012, the government began the serialization of 1,775 schools it constructed to replace the over 4,000 schools under trees it inherited in 2009 from the previous administration.
