Kotoko and Hearts separated to fight for GHALCA finals place
After consultations with the Top 4 clubs, the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) has revised the format of this year’s Top 4 flagship pre-season tournament.
The competition was initially launched last week to be played in a league format which would have seen each club engage in six games with the top two battling out for the ultimate in a grand finale.
However, league champions Asante Kotoko initially objected to the timing and format of the competition which they believe was disadvantageous to their preparations towards the new season.
And FootyGhana can confirm that rivals Accra Hearts of Oak also later seconded Kotoko’s motion prompting the parent body of the Ghana League Clubs Association to alter their initial arrangement.
GHALCA on Thursday held a meeting with the four teams Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, AshantiGold and Heart of Lions and a new format and dates for the 2014 competition has been decided.
The new format will see two match days (first and second leg) – August 31 and September 3 – preceding the grand finale set for the Baba Yara Stadium on September 7.
Accra Hearts of Oak will host Heart of Lions at the Accra Stadium, while Asante Kotoko hosts AshantiGold at the Baba Yara Stadium on August 31. The second leg of these fixtures will then be played in Accra and Obuasi respectively on Wednesday, September 3 to determine who makes the finals.
