Online awards to promote local cinema

The Choice Film Awards, aimed primarily at recognising hard-working local producers, increasing their revenue base and helping to showcase their work to a worldwide audience has been launched in Accra.
Kwame Boadi, Managing Director of inGenius Africa, said at the launch ceremony in Accra last week that their travels around the country made them realise how much audiences love films in local languages, alongside productions in English.
He said the realisation triggered the idea for the Choice Film Awards, which is being organised in collaboration with the Film Producers Association of  Ghana (FIPAG).
According to Mr Boadi, over 300 local productions have been submitted and the eventual winner would be the film most watched by the public. There’s a prize of $2,000 for the winning film.
The Technical Director of inGenius Africa, Oliver Safo, added that the competition site could be accessed from any internet-ready device including smartphones and computer tablets.
Mr Safo pointed out that cut-off date for submission of films is  August 31. The 10 most watched films would be announced by September 21.
The awards night would be telecast live on the Internet on Saturday, November 22.
The films are being hosted on the ReelAfrican YouTube channel.
