Man Utd in double swoop for Vermaelen and Benatia

The Red Devils are light on numbers in defence, and former Holland boss Louis van Gaal is on the look-out for new faces after Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand left the club as free agents.
The Dutchman has made numerous changes since taking the reins at Old Trafford, most notably switching to a bold 3-5-2 formation.
And with just Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones at his disposal, Van Gaal is willing to meet Roma’s £30million asking price in order to beat Chelsea and Real Madrid to Benatia’s signature.
United are also locked in a duel with Barcelona over Vermaelen, who would prefer a move to Old Trafford over the Nou Camp, but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger revealed earlier today that he would rather sanction a £10million move abroad for the 28-year-old Belgian.
Despite the fierce competition, Van Gaal is confident of landing both players as he also targets late deals for Fiorentina wing-back Juan Cuadrado and Juventus powerhouse Arturo Vidal, with stars including Shinji Kagawa and Javier Hernandez on their way out of the club.
