GH¢100 million pledge to improve power supply in Ashanti Region

Just over a week after protesters took to the streets of Kumasi, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)  has pledged to invest about GH¢100 million to improve power supply to consumers in the Ashanti Region.
This involves renovation and upgrading of sub-stations, construction of additional bulk power supply points and district offices, and installation of more transformers to ensure efficient service delivery.
Speaking at a news briefing in Kumasi, ECG Managing Director Mr William Hutton-Mensah announced measures the company is taking to stabilise power supply in the region.
He said even though the current energy generation challenges are affecting its operations, it is working hard to make things better. Mr Hutton-Mensah said the company was working to improve its revenue generation through a series of measures including:

• a nationwide mass disconnection exercise to retrieve unpaid bills from customers
• introduction of a pre-paid metering system for all customers to reduce the cost of revenue collection
• tackling illegal power tapping and prosecuting offenders in court

Mr Hutton-Mensah was positive that consumers would eventually see an improvement in power supply. He asked the public to do more to conserve energy as well as reducing their power bills.
