World Cup – what the world really wants to know

Black Stars forward Asamoah Gyan and midfielders Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari are the Ghana players attracting the most interest online, data by search engine Google reveal.
Polls also show that although 79 per cent of Ghanaians are positive about the outcome of the Ghana v USA match later today, they are more concerned about the outcome than the Americans.
One may think it’s all about the football, but internet searches indicate that fans are more interested in learning more about the players and other unrelated issues.
A look at trends from the 403.9 million Google searches since the World Cup started reveal the following interesting facts:

  • People were more interested in finding out about Neymar’s new yellow hair and his neck tattoo than about the yellow card he got in the Brazil v Croatia game and the impact it may have on his style of play in the forthcoming Brazil v Mexico game on 17 June.
  • Even with the NBA Finals still in progress, USA searches are 10 times higher for the World Cup ahead of the US v Black Stars clash today.
  • After dislocating his ankle to celebrate England’s goal, physiotherapist Gary Lewin attracted two times more England search interest than goal scorer Daniel Sturridge.
  • Worldwide searches for Mario Balotelli are 90 times higher than for the videogame, Super Mario Bros.
