Sarkodie crowned hip hop king at MTV Awards
Ghana’s Sarkodie has been named best hip hop artist at the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) this evening.
The MAMAs were compered by US comedian Marlon Wayans of the Wayans brothers fame.
Songstress Efya was nominated for the Best Female category, but lost out to Tiwa Savage of Nigeria.
The awards, held at the Durban International Convention Centre, drew the best artists from across the African continent and beyond across 15 categories.
The evening’s winners were:
- Best New Act – Stanley Enow (Cameroon)
- Best alternative – Gangs of Ballet (South Africa)
- Best Group – Mafikizolo (South Africa)
- Best Male – Davido (Nigeria)
- Best Live Act – Flavour (Nigeria)
- Best Lusophone – Anselmo Ralph (Angola)
- Best Francophone – Toofan (Togo)
- Artist of the Year – Davido (Nigeria)
- Best Collaboration – Y Tjukuta
- Song of the Year – Mafikizolo (South Africa) featuring Uhuru
- Personality of the Year – Lupita Nyong’o (Kenya)
- Leadership award for under 35s making a contribution to development – Ashish Thakkar (social entrepreneur)
- Transform Today award for bringing about social transformation – Clarence Peters (Video Director – Nigeria)
