Former military chief Sisi is Egypt's new president

Early results show that former military chief Abdul Fattah al-Sisi is set to become Egypt’s next president after winning by an overwhelming majority.

Mr Sisi gained more than 93 per cent of the vote, but analysts say this does not necessarily reflect the will of the people, as Islamist and secular groups are known to have boycotted the vote.
The former field marshall deposed President Mohammed Morsi in July 2013 after mass protests.
He has overseen a bloody crackdown on Mr Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood movement in which more than 1,400 people have been killed and 16,000 detained.
