Ghana is ill-prepared for terrorist attacks – Security Analyst

Security Analyst, Emanuel Sowatey has stated that security agencies in the country are not adequately prepared to deal with activities of terrorists should the unfortunate happen in Ghana. 

On Saturday, a Somali based terrorist group called Al-Shabab attacked a Kenyan mall which claimed over 60 lives including that of Ghana’s former Chairman of the Council of State, Professor Kofi Awoonor.

The attack has raised serious questions concerning the readiness of Ghana to combat any such attacks in the country.

Speaking to Citi News on the issue , Mr. Sowatey noted that security personnel in Ghana are ill-equipped to deal with similar attacks.

He advised government to as a matter of urgency, put in place measures to well develop the capabilities of security forces in the country.

According to him, the existence of the Special Forces in Ghana is not enough to guarantee absolute protection for Ghanaians, saying “You don’t say you have special forces by the uniform or by just saying special forces.”

He suggested that Ghanaians should serve as cardinal agents “to understand and pick up information and relay it at the right time to the right person and I think that if you put these things together, it will help.”

Mr. Sowatey further added that government officials must consult security agencies when formulating foreign policy for the country in other to prevent such situations.

“Your foreign policy pronouncement has a bearing on internal security and anytime politicians are making international pronouncements, interviews and commitments, they should check with their security to see how o put in place measures to prevent any negative consequences,” he added.
