Peace Watch Ghana Calls for Independent Ghana Police Service Amid Allegations and Intimidation

Madam Daniels highlighted that when individuals close to or affiliated with the government violate the law, they receive protection, while the police officers involved in their arrest or attempted arrest face intimidation or transfers to different jurisdictions. To address this issue, Peace Watch Ghana has been demanding the separation of the Ghana Police Service from government control to ensure independence in discharging their duties.

These remarks come in response to allegations made by Reverend Owusu Bempah against Inspector George Akufo Dampare, the IGP. Reverend Owusu Bempah accused the IGP of deploying police officers to arrest and harm him. Peace Watch Ghana has categorically stated that these allegations are false and is demanding an unqualified apology from Reverend Owusu Bempah.

Peace Watch Ghana further emphasized that no one, including the President, is above the law. They assert that Reverend Owusu Bempah must be held accountable for his accusations, which have caused fear, panic, and a loss of trust in the IGP and the Ghana Police Service as a whole. The organization pleads with Vice President and NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, as well as the Chairman of the Police Council, to take action and bring Reverend Owusu Bempah to order.

Peace Watch Ghana has also criticized Bryan Acheampong minster for agriculture and former minister of state for national security for his recent comments during the Easter celebrations. They believe that his statement about not accepting the NDC as the new government, even if they win the election, is uncalled for and puts the peace of the country at risk hence calling for retraction and also the government to arrest him over his comment It’s important to take such concerns seriously and work towards maintaining peace and unity during the electoral process. She said.
