EC hires experts to investigate bloated register claims

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei, has revealed that the commission has engaged the services of independent IT experts to investigate the allegations of a bloated voters’ register. The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) had earlier presented evidence which puts the credibility of the nation’s electoral roll in doubt. According to the NPP, there was evidence of about 80000 Togolese nationals in the country’s register hence their demands for a new one.
The General Secretary of the governing NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia however described such allegations as untrue stating that they are attempts by the opposition to attack the integrity of some groups of  persons in the country.
The EC subsequently requested that all parties submit their proposals for a revised voters register to enable it decide the way forward. Briefing the media after an Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Wednesday, Madam Charlotte Osei stated that the commission is now evaluating the proposals ahead of a forum to decide on the need for a new register. “Now as a commission we are going to evaluate these proposals and we are also investigating the allegations which have been made by some political parties especially when it touches on the integrity or the security of our IT systems. We are getting independent outside expertise to help us look into those allegations,” she said.
