Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Akomea, has expressed doubt that Alan John Kwadwo Kyeremanten is behind posters touting his candidature for the NPP flagbearership for the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Posters bearing the inscription “2016 Alan Kyerematen, New Hope” with Mr Kyerematen’s picture and the NPP emblem have appeared in at least 7 regions across the country despite the NPP’s backing for a petition filed by 2012 flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo, running mate Mahamudu Bawumia and national chairman Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey.
Mr Kyerematen, who lost the NPP flagbearer contest to Nana Akufo-Addo in 2010, is now actively campaigning to be Director General of the World Trade Organisation, headquartered in Switzerland.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show on Tuesday January 22, 2013, Nana Akomea said “I doubt that Alan, with all his political knowledge, will be behind this or is causing them to be posted, because if he is behind it, it may likely work against him in the party.”
While declining to point any accusing fingers, Nana Akomea said those behind the printing and posting of the poster did not understand the workings of the NPP. The party, he pointed out, was now going to conduct elections from the grassroots right up to the national level before a flagbearer contest is held, over a period of more than one year, “so anybody doing that now (campaigning for flagbearer) would only be working against his own candidature.
“Alan is now actively vying to be Director General of the World Trade Organisation, a very huge post, so it would be unthinkable for him to leave that now and contest for a local flagbearership. It would not help him anywhere, WTO or any flagbearership race.”
Nevertheless, “I will urge Alan to speak on the matter and lay the whole issue to rest”, he advised.
In another development, Nana Akomea has questioned the rationale behind recent comments by Dr Charles Wereko-Brobbey in respect of the NPP’s petition against the results of the 2012 elections at the Supreme Court.
In a series of open letters and interviews, Dr Wereko Brobbey, who describes himself as a “Founding Member of the NPP and Victor Owusu’s nephew” in his latest letter, has called on the NPP to “cut out the comic tragedy” over its decision to boycott the Buem and Akatsi South by-elections until the determination of the NPP’s petition against the Electoral Commission and John Dramani Mahama.
He is also calling on the party to direct its energies towards winning the 2016 elections and stop what he referred to as “self promotional gimmicks.”
But Nana Akomea has advised Dr Wereko-Brobbey to be circumspect in his choice of words, saying “I don’t think he is helping himself with his utterances and writings.”
“It is very difficult to understand the motives behind his stance against the NPP decision to go to court. Why didn’t he just let it go when government operatives seized his radio transmission equipment for his station Radio Eye in 1995? But the NPP stood behind him and went on demonstrations in his support.
“We (NPP) believe there are serious problems with the results of the 2012 elections, and we are challenging it in court. Day in and day out, party supporters keep asking us what is going on. So it is a little difficult to understand why Dr Wereko-Brobbey is going the way he is going.”
