Security personnel will not be disenfranchised – EC

Security officials and Electoral Commission workers who were unable to vote during the special voting exercise on Tuesday, December 4, will have another opportunity to cast their ballot on Friday, December 7.

Hundreds of security personnel could not vote during the exercise because their names were missing from the biometric voters register, a situation the EC has said can be rectified easily.

In a press statement signed the Deputy Chairman (Operations) of the Commission, Mr. Safo-Kantanka announced that the affected personnel “may go back to their polling stations where they registered on Friday, 7th December, 2012 to cast their ballot.”

“The Election officials may also show their letters of appointment as election officials to enjoy the same privilege.”

In an earlier interview with Citi News, the Principal Public Relations Officer at the Electoral Commission, Sylvia Annor explained that the inability for some of the personnel to vote was because, “we detected that some of them did their registration elsewhere. For example, some did their registration in the Eastern Region, now they are here in Accra to cast their vote and they haven’t done what we call transfer of votes. It will be difficult because the verification machines are constituency based. You cannot register elsewhere for example in Tamale and assume that when you go to Tema, you can vote there without transferring your vote.”
