We’ve no confidence in the police – Napo's lawyer flares up

Nana Yaw Osei, the lawyer for NPP MP for Manhyia Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has stated, emphatically that in spite of the numerous plots to take away the life of his client, none of them would be reported to the police for investigations.
Lawyer Yaw Osei was certain in his interview with Joy FM’s Evans Mensah on Top Story Monday, that it would be a waste of time running to the police for any assistance, arguing that nothing good has come out of the several complaints of clashes lodged with the police.
For that reason, he stressed, “we have not reported anything to the police yet …we do not have any confidence [in them] for now”.
For instance, he claimed Dr Matthew Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, was the target of Thursday’s attack in Ashtown, but he said his client is rather being investigated. The police, he said, have searched “every nook and cranny” of Napo’s house, and wondered: “What sort of investigation is that?”
Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh was arrested Friday and subsequently bailed over the Ashtown incidence. Meanwhile, the MP also stands accused of sending life threatening text messages to the CEO of the Food and Drugs Board, Dr. Stephen Opuni.
Dr. Opuni, in one of the messages was accused of plotting to assassinate the NPP MP and also planning with some NDC functionaries to cause chaos in Kumasi and other NPP strongholds. He has however denied the allegations.
But lawyer for Dr Prempeh insisted “Dr Prempeh has reasons to believe that some people including Dr Opuni plotted his assassination” about four months ago. He said when his client first heard of the plot, he took it to be one of the political tantrums being churned out, until the shooting incident at Ashtown when Napo was on a door-to-door campaign.
Asked why he chose to send the messages to Dr Opuni instead of going to the police, Mr Yaw Osei maintained that, “We will not go to the police; but as to whether we will just go to the police as a matter of compulsion; that one is not an option now”.
He disagreed that the text messages sent by his client were threatening messages. “There is nothing threatening about the text message,” he remarked.
Mr Yaw Osei warned that even though there is peace in Kumasi currently with everybody going about his duty freely, “…if indeed people are still having the plans of attacking the Hon. Member of Parliament then everybody cannot be safe because he has supporters”.
He noted that his client is going on with his campaign but has beefed up his security detail.
