Aliu Mahama Dead: Burial arrangements in limbo?
The location of the final resting place of the late Vice President of the Republic, Alhaji Aliu Mahama has become a muddy affair with separate sections of the family advocating for different places.
Information available to Kessben Fm.com indicates that while one section of the family is demanding for a burial at the Asomdwe Memorial Park, another is strongly advocating for a return of the remains of the former Vice President to his home town, Yendi.
The latest addition to the list of burial locations is Tamale in the Northern Region.
Earlier on Saturday, the official spokesperson of the family, Alhaji Rahman Gomda had informed Citi News that Tamale had been decided on as the location for the interment of the late former Vice President.
“Indeed, Tamale is the location of internment of the late former Vice President, Aliu Mahama. The mortal remains will be airlifted to Tamale at about midday tomorrow after a preliminary burial service at the forecourt of the State House,” he said.
According to him, though the Asomdwe Memorial Park had been scheduled to be burial place of Alhaji Aliu Mahama, the decision was reconsidered following careful consideration of the concerns of late statesman’s family.
Citi News’ investigations reveal that that decision of Asomdwe Park had not gone down well with some sections of the family residing in the North.
Alhaji Aliu Mahama died in the early hours of Friday, November 16, 2012 after suffering a stroke, a fact confirmed by former President John Kufuor in an interview with Citi News.
His passing was confirmed by Chief Executive Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Prof. Otu Nartey, in a press statement. According to Prof. Nartey’s statement, he died at 9:45am at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital at the age of 66.
His death came barely three days after media reports wrongfully pronounced him dead, a situation which was debunked and thus sparked a heated controversy between the media and his family members.
