Haftar announces plan to run for Libya presidency

The Libyan general, Khalifa Haftar, whose army is based in the east of the country, has announced that he intends to run in the presidential election due next month.

In a televised speech, Gen Haftar said elections were the only way out of Libya’s severe crisis.

The military prosecutor, Mohamed Gharouda, had already asked the electoral authorities to reject Gen Haftar’s possible candidacy, because of the offensive he launched against the capital, Tripoli, in 2019.
