Ashtown violence: Opoku Prempeh arrested and granted bail
The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary candidate for Manhyia in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh was on Friday arrested by the Ashanti Regional Police Command concerning the shooting incident which occurred at Ashtown in Kumasi on Thursday.
Violence broke out on Thursday in Ashtown among some supporters of the NPP and NDC when Dr. Opoku Prempeh embarked on a door to door campaign in the area; an incident the Police has since declared was not politically motivated.
The Police at a press briefing on Friday had revealed all efforts to get in touch with Dr. Opoku Prempeh to assist in investigations had proved futile.
In an interview on Eyewitness News on Friday, the Public Relations of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Yussif Tanko said the NPP Parliamentary candidate was arrested because “we cannot take an investigation caution statement from a suspect without him first being arrested. So you have to be arrested before the caution statement is taken from you.”
ASP Tanko explained that “he [Dr. Opoku Prempeh] came to the Police Station himself and an investigation caution statement was taken from him and he was later released on bail with one surety at GHC 30,000.”
