Kotoko need $800,000 for Africa campaign
Defending Ghana League Champions Asante Kotoko need 800,000 US dollars for their upcoming CAF Champion’s League Campaign, a board member has revealed.
Jerry Asare, who is also chairman of the club’s CAF Champion’s League Planning Committee, revealed on Saturday’s Joy Sports Link that the club’s estimates from recent meetings show they need to cough up the amount if they are to play through to the final stages of the continental competition.
“We are aware of the huge financial implications and we are committed to raising that amount. We will have a fund raising dinner and also institute some other events like raffles and fundraising events that will help us reach the target,” he said.
According to Jerry Asare, Kotoko is aiming to make a major impact in the tournament and also give off a trophy winning performance.
“We are really bent on succeeding on the continent and once the Glo Premier League is in session we will replicate our fine form in the CAF Champion’s league when it begins,” he told the Joy Sports Link.
Asante Kotoko conquered Africa in 1970 and 1983 and finished runners-up in 1967, 1971, 1973, 1983 and 1993 editions. Based in Ghana’s second largest city Kumasi, Asante Kotoko is the most achieved club in the local league having won 21 titles – one more than their archrivals Hearts OF Oak.
Kotoko won the 2011/12 league under Maxwell Konadu who is now assistant to Ghana Coach Kwasi Appiah.
