Melcom Tragedy [Latest] – Death toll rises to nine
With rescue efforts continuing through Wednesday night, Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije has confirmed that 72 persons have so far been removed from the rubble with four confirmed dead.
From the number, 34 are male and 34 are female. Of the dead however, three are women with one male. Rescue operations, according to Citi News’s Pearl Ofori, rescue operations are still ongoing.
The Achimota branch of the Melcom Shopping Complex opposite the Neoplan Assembly Plant, collapsed on Wednesday around 8.45am.
A team of disaster management experts and doctors from Isreal are expected in the country to assist with rescue efforts. This is in fulfilment of the promise made by the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Bar-li made on Wednesday. The equipment would include emergency medical equipment, rescue and monitoring equipment.
President Mahama has said those whose negligence led to the tragedy “will pay a price.”
