A controversy has reportedly erupted at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), following allegations that 38 teachers are facing transfers amid a dispute involving the school’s headmaster and claims of sexual misconduct.
The development has sparked concerns among some residents and education stakeholders, with fears that the situation could seriously affect academic activities, particularly the preparation of final-year students for their examinations.
Speaking via zoom interview on Kessben Punch Show in Accra , the President of Concerned Adanse Citizens, Anthony Coffie Nature, insisted, the group has been pursuing the matter for several months without achieving the desired intervention from the relevant authorities.
He claimed that initial attempts to engage the school’s leadership were unsuccessful because teachers were allegedly reluctant to speak openly about the situation in protection of their jobs.
In a further development, the group alleges that the controversy has taken on political dimensions, complicating efforts to resolve the matter.
Coffie Nature stated that concerns have been presented to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service (GES), the Regional Education Director and the Municipal Directors of Education in Obuasi East and West.
He further alleged that the headmaster holds a position as an NDC constituency secretary and claims that his political connections may be influencing the handling of the dispute.
One of the most troubling allegations contained in the petition is that 38 teachers are facing transfers because of their opposition to the alleged sexual misconduct involving the headmaster.
The Concerned Citizens group claims its investigations suggest that the affected teachers are among those who have raised concerns about the school’s leadership, though
the petition does not provide documentary evidence establishing the reasons for the reported transfers.
The petition also raises serious concerns about the academic future of final-year students, who are reportedly being made to stay home while awaiting their examinations.
The group fears that the possible transfer of 38 teachers could further disrupt teaching and learning, leaving students inadequately prepared for their final examinations.
The Concerned Citizens of Adanse say they have also petitioned traditional leaders within their jurisdiction to intervene.
According to the Coffie Nature’s statement, the group previously appealed to Nana Adanse Hene for assistance in resolving the controversy and preventing further consequences for students.
The group is calling for urgent attention to the matter to protect students’ academic interests and ensure that the allegations are properly investigated.
As the controversy unfolds, critical questions remain: What is the official justification for the reported transfer of 38 teachers? And what measures are being taken to safeguard the academic future of the affected students?
