The law is on the side of Wontumi – Atta Akyea, Counsel for Wontumi
Counsel for former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, Samuel Atta Akyea, has expressed confidence that the law favours his client.
According to him, Chairman Wontumi should not be held responsible for the actions of an individual he allegedly instructed to undertake reclamation but who instead acted contrary to those instructions.
Mr Atta Akyea is optimistic that the judge will grant his client bail pending the determination of his appeal against the Criminal Court’s decision.
Speaking to the media ahead of the hearing, he said he believes the circumstances of the case justify granting Chairman Wontumi bail, which would also allow him to assist his legal team in dealing with other cases against him.
“The law is also on his side. I do not see how somebody who holds a licence and sends another person to undertake reclamation should suffer because that person does the opposite,” he argued.
He further described the case as a strong one, noting that the individual involved was allegedly an accomplice.
Mr Atta Akyea maintained that the court could grant Chairman Wontumi his freedom while his appeal is pending, adding that he would return to prison if the appeal is unsuccessful.
