Wontumi to be released today? Court to hear Chairman Wontumi’s bail application today

The Accra High Court is expected to hear a bail application filed by former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
His legal team is seeking bail to secure his release from custody while he appeals his conviction and 20-year prison sentence for illegal mining-related offences involving a concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
The application was initially scheduled for hearing on August 19 but was adjourned after both Mr Boasiako and his lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, failed to appear before the court.
The court clerk later informed the parties that the presiding judge would be unavailable for the rest of that week, prompting the rescheduling of the hearing to today.
The defence is expected to present its arguments in support of granting Mr Boasiako bail while the appeal against his conviction and sentence remains pending.
Filed in August, the application forms part of efforts by his lawyers to secure his release during the appellate process.
However, the Attorney-General has opposed the application, citing concerns that the former NPP regional chairman could pose a flight risk.
The court is expected to consider the submissions from both the defence and the prosecution before deciding whether to grant Chairman Wontumi bail pending the determination of his appeal.
