Somalia faces growing hunger fears as El Niño strengthens

Somalia is facing growing concerns over food security as a strengthening super El Niño weather system threatens devastating floods ahead of its expected peak in December.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned that farmers are facing a difficult choice between planting crops and risking destruction by floodwaters or leaving their fields bare, potentially worsening hunger in the coming year.
Nuh Adan, a farmer and community leader in Bayahaaw, warned that flooding could disrupt local agriculture for months, while residents of displacement camps fear being forced to flee their shelters.
The concerns follow the 2023 El Niño-related disaster, which affected nearly two million people and displaced about 500,000 in Somalia.
Although aid agencies say improved data and preparedness measures could help reduce the impact, the ICRC has cautioned that significant cuts in humanitarian funding since 2025 have weakened response capacity.
Working with the Somali Red Crescent Society, the ICRC is distributing sandbags, prepositioning essential supplies in flood-prone areas and stocking health facilities with medical and nutrition supplies ahead of the expected floods.
