We left good systems, but the current education ministry is failing because they want to do things their own way – Hon Yaw Adutwum

Former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has criticised the current management of Ghana’s education sector, arguing that some of the challenges confronting the sector are linked to decisions by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to change existing systems.

Speaking on Kessben FM, Dr. Adutwum said the previous administration left behind what he described as “very good machines” and systems designed to support the effective running of the education sector.

According to him, the current Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, is facing difficulties because the administration has chosen to do things in its own way instead of building on systems and institutional arrangements established under the previous government.

His comments come amid continuing concerns over the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) and other challenges in the education sector. In a separate interview earlier in September, Dr. Adutwum argued that problems with the placement system were more about the policies and algorithms guiding it than the computer software itself.

The former minister has also offered to share his experience with his successor, but Mr. Iddrisu has questioned what advice he could seek from Dr. Adutwum, citing challenges he says the current administration inherited from the previous government.
