The National Democratic Congress ( NDC ) Director of IT and Elections, Mahdi Jibril, has questioned the politicisation of national issues, particularly discussions surrounding cocaine, arguing that such matters should be treated as national concerns rather than partisan political issues.
According to a remark he made on the Kessben Maakye show in Accra, Jibril said no individual or political party should claim exclusive ownership of Ghana’s national interest.
He reportedly criticised the contradiction of calling for the cocaine issue to be treated as a national concern while simultaneously linking it to a political party.
“Nobody speaks for Ghana but our political parties,” Jibril stated.
He further questioned the position of individuals who, on one hand, argue that the cocaine issue should not be politicised but, on the other hand, allegedly describe it as an “NDC 24-hour cocaine problem.”
Jibril also suggested that various groups and individuals including pastors, mallams and teachers often claim to be working in the interest of Ghana, while their actions or commentary may reflect other interests.
His remarks come amid continuing political debate over cocaine-related issues and the extent to which such matters should be subjected to partisan political discourse.
The comments are likely to fuel further discussion about the need to separate national security and public-interest issues from party politics.
