Dormaa West NHIS membership hits 90.25% as NHIA commissions new office
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has recorded an increase in active National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) membership in the Dormaa West District of the Bono Region, rising from 89.01 percent in September 2025 to 90.25 percent in September 2026.
Speaking at the commissioning of a new NHIA office in the district, the Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, said the achievement places Dormaa West above the 80 percent membership threshold considered an indicator of progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Dormaa West has an estimated population of 54,428 people spread across more than 96 communities.
Dr Asare Bampoe commended President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister of Health, the Minister of Finance, the NHIA Board and other stakeholders for their support towards the retooling and strengthening of the Authority.
He said the newly commissioned facility should serve more than an administrative purpose, stressing that it must become a centre where NHIS members can receive timely assistance and have their concerns addressed.
The NHIA CEO also cautioned healthcare providers and staff against imposing illegal charges or top-ups on NHIS members for services covered under the scheme. He urged officials to educate members about their rights and entitlements.
Dr Asare Bampoe said sustainable healthcare delivery under the NHIS depends on financially sustainable healthcare providers, which requires prompt and predictable reimbursement.
He disclosed that the NHIA had pursued a 50 percent increase in service tariffs and had paid healthcare providers nationwide approximately GH¢1.7 billion so far this year.
He further urged staff to properly maintain the new facility and ensure that it serves its intended purpose.
According to him, the facility should represent improved access, responsiveness, accountability and trust as the NHIA works to strengthen the NHIS and support Ghana’s progress towards Universal Health Coverage.
The Bono Regional Director of the NHIA, Isaac Badu Amponsah, described the previous working conditions at the Dormaa West District Office as deplorable.
He cited cramped working spaces, unreliable electricity supply and poor sanitation as some of the challenges faced by staff and members.
Mr Amponsah said the situation was particularly difficult for elderly persons, pregnant women and people with special needs who visited the office to access NHIA services.
He explained that the concerns were brought to the attention of the NHIA Chief Executive Officer, who responded with measures to improve the working environment and enhance service delivery.
Mr Amponsah reaffirmed the regional directorate’s commitment to professionalism, hard work and dedication in fulfilling the NHIA’s mandate and improving access to healthcare across the Bono Region.
The Member of Parliament for Dormaa West, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, also commended community members for their commitment and involvement in monitoring and supervising the project.
He urged Assembly members, institutional heads, community leaders and residents to actively monitor development projects initiated by politicians in their communities.
He said such oversight would help ensure that contractors complete projects on schedule and according to the required standards.
