“You Can Do Biotechnology With A Music Minor” – University of Vermont Woos Ghanaian Students With Flexible US Degrees

Assistant Director for South Asia Admissions at the University of Vermont, Dhairya Gohel, says the overwhelming response from Ghanaian students at this year’s EducationUSA College Fair in Kumasi and Accra has been encouraging, prompting him to come out of his usual territory to recruit in Ghana.

“My name is Dhairya Gohel. I represent the University of Vermont. I work as the Assistant Director for South Asia. So yes, I’m in Ghana, and I’ve come out of my territory to recruit students from Ghana. I was in Kumasi yesterday, and I’m in Accra today. It’s been a really overwhelming response from all of the students that I’ve been meeting,” he told journalists.

He said he has met a diverse mix of Ghanaian students showing interest in various programs offered by the university.

Giving a brief about his institution, Mr. Gohel said the University of Vermont is located north of Boston – about a three-hour drive from Boston and a 45-minute flight from New York.

“We are a tiny, small state which is a college town with about 460 acres widespread greenery with nine colleges. We offer programs which are renowned in STEM, MBA, public health, environmental sciences, and health sciences,” he said.

Why Choose The US?

Mr. Gohel said the biggest advantage the US offers as a study destination is diversity, variety and flexibility that no other country provides.

“One very important thing that I need to tell the students about why to choose US as a study destination is the impression the US has, the diversity and the variety of programs that US has, because we have about 4,000 plus institutions, which is a mix of community colleges, private and public institutions,” he explained.

He highlighted the US system’s unique customization that allows students to combine different fields of interest.

“Apart from that, if a student is interested in various programs at the same time, I don’t think any other university or any other country offers this, but US has this customization of choosing a major and a minor. So I have a lot of students who want to do biotechnology, but at the same time also do a music minor. So that is something that US offers,” he said.

According to him, the ability for students to design their own credits and syllabus year-to-year to qualify for a bachelor’s or master’s degree makes the US stand out.

“The availability of programs in terms of how you design your own credits and your syllabus on a year-to-year basis in order to be eligible for a bachelor’s or a master’s degree is something that US stands out for,” he added.

Mr. Gohel thanked organizers for having him and said he looks forward to returning to Ghana to recruit more students.
