Teacher Unions Declare Nationwide Strike
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers’ Association of Ghana (PRETAG) have declared a nationwide strike effective today, Friday, September 25, 2026.
The unions have directed their members to stay off the job until the government addresses their concerns.
Key among their grievances is the delay in paying the 20% Deprived Area Allowance and the failure to place promoted teachers who have qualified for higher grades on the government payroll.
The unions are also demanding the immediate placement of about 8,000 teachers who have successfully passed their promotion examinations but are yet to be placed on the payroll.
The leadership of the three unions announced the industrial action during a media engagement in Accra.
They cited delays, unfulfilled promises by government agencies and pressure from their members as reasons for the strike.
