Upgraded Banknotes to Strengthen Protection Against Counterfeiting – BoG Governor

Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama has defended the central bank’s decision to introduce upgraded Ghana cedi banknotes, saying the new notes will feature enhanced security, improved durability and modern designs that celebrate Ghana’s heritage and national aspirations.

According to Dr Asiama, the upgraded banknotes, known as the “Heritage Series,” are designed to provide stronger protection against counterfeiting, withstand prolonged circulation and promote more efficient and cost-effective currency management.

He announced the introduction of the new banknotes during the 132nd Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press conference held in Accra on Thursday, September 24.

Dr Asiama said the Heritage Series would also provide an opportunity to honour Ghana’s national heroes and showcase the country’s culture, heritage and identity through modern currency designs.

He explained that each denomination draws inspiration from Ghanaian iconographic elements, reflecting the nation’s history while projecting its aspirations for the future.

The Governor stressed that the introduction of the Heritage Series does not mean the existing Ghana cedi banknotes will cease to be legal tender.

He said the new notes will circulate alongside the existing banknotes, urging the public to continue using both versions.

“There is no need for the public to rush to exchange or withdraw existing notes solely because of the introduction of the Heritage Series,” he said.

Dr Asiama further called on Ghanaians, businesses, traders and financial institutions to take proper care of banknotes, describing the protection of the currency as a shared national responsibility.

He urged the public to avoid crumpling, writing on, stapling or using banknotes for decorative purposes, money bouquets, spraying and other forms of currency abuse.

According to him, proper handling of the notes will help maintain their quality, reduce the cost of replacing damaged currency and promote efficient currency management.
