Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) has been admitted as a Full Member of the World Patients Alliance (WPA), marking a significant development in the organisation’s growing engagement in human rights, health advocacy and patient empowerment.
The admission was formally communicated to HRRG on behalf of the Board of Directors of the World Patients Alliance following the successful consideration of the organisation’s membership application.
HRRG says the new membership will provide an opportunity to connect its human rights advocacy work with the global movement for stronger patient participation, improved healthcare access and greater respect for human dignity.
The World Patients Alliance is a global umbrella organisation for patients and patient organisations working across disease areas and regions. It provides a platform to empower and raise the patient voice for safe, quality and affordable healthcare, while promoting the active participation of patients in the planning, provision, monitoring, research and evaluation of health services.
The Alliance’s mission includes working towards patient empowerment and engagement, improved access to safe and innovative treatment and patient-centered healthcare worldwide.
Strengthening the Link Between Human Rights and Healthcare
For HRRG, the membership represents an opportunity to deepen its work at the intersection of human rights, healthcare, social justice, media advocacy and community empowerment.
The organisation believes that access to quality healthcare and respect for human dignity are important components of the broader human rights agenda.
HRRG further believes that patients should not only be recipients of healthcare services but should have their voices heard and their experiences considered in decisions and policies affecting their health and wellbeing.
The organisation says it looks forward to bringing its experience in human rights reporting, advocacy, public education and community engagement to the WPA community while learning from fellow members and exploring opportunities for collaboration.
Amplifying the Patient Voice
HRRG says its membership of the WPA aligns with its broader commitment to ensuring that the voices of vulnerable and marginalised communities are recognised in public discourse and policymaking.
The organisation intends to contribute to conversations around patient rights, patient empowerment, healthcare access, inclusion and human dignity.
“Healthcare is a human right, and every patient deserves to be heard, respected and treated with dignity,” HRRG said.
The organisation believes meaningful patient participation can contribute to healthcare systems that are more inclusive, responsive and centered on the needs of the people they serve.
The WPA similarly emphasises patient participation in healthcare decision-making and advocates for patient engagement and empowerment at different levels of healthcare systems.
Opportunities for Collaboration
As a Full Member of the World Patients Alliance, HRRG looks forward to engaging with fellow members, patient organisations, civil society groups and other stakeholders working to advance patient rights and healthcare globally.
The organisation also expects to contribute its experience in human rights reporting, advocacy, public education and community engagement while learning from other organisations within the WPA network.
According to the WPA, membership provides organisations with opportunities to influence global healthcare policies, access resources and events, and collaborate and network with like-minded organisations.
HRRG has expressed its appreciation to the Board of Directors and the entire World Patients Alliance team for welcoming the organisation into the global alliance.
The new membership adds to HRRG’s growing engagement with regional and international networks focused on human rights, social justice, inclusion and sustainable development.
