GoldBod: ‘Nobody hates you’ – Afenyo-Markin tells Sammy Gyamfi

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has rejected claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has a personal grievance against the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said the Minority’s concerns were focused on the operations and activities of GoldBod and were not intended as a personal attack on its CEO.

His comments follow remarks by Mr Gyamfi describing the Minority Leader’s criticism as driven by “bitterness” and insisting that he was ready to appear before Parliament to account for GoldBod’s operations.

Mr Gyamfi had also accused Mr Afenyo-Markin and other NPP figures of raising concerns about GoldBod without making specific allegations requiring a response.

Responding to the comments in an interview on Metro TV, Mr Afenyo-Markin said neither he nor former Finance Minister Abena Osei-Asare had any personal animosity towards Mr Gyamfi.

“Sammy, NPP, nobody hates you. Abena Osei Asare doesn’t hate you. I don’t hate you. We want the best for you. Some of the people you think are your friends today that you deploy to attack us merely for questioning certain actions at GoldBod may not be there tomorrow.

“So take it easy, when we raise issues, take your time and respond. Don’t come and attack us and don’t engage others to attack us because we criticised GoldBod,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin urged Mr Gyamfi to show greater tolerance towards criticism, reminding him of his vocal role in raising concerns about  government policies while in opposition.

“You were very loud, Sammy, when you were in opposition. You raised critical issues; you were the loudest, so you should have a certain level of tolerance to listen because most of these issues are what have been reported by the IMF and institutions that are credible. We are not after your person,” he said.
