The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has donated US$250,000.00 — approximately GHS3 million — to Ghana to support victims of the recent devastating floods.
The announcement was made by Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, who said the Foreign Ministry has been officially notified of the donation by ECOWAS.
“I wish to announce, in the spirit of transparency and accountability, that the Foreign Ministry has just been notified by ECOWAS that they have decided to donate US$250,000.00 (about GHS3million) to Ghana for victims of the recent devastating floods,” he stated.
Funds to be handed over in full
Mr. Ablakwa assured that the entire amount will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for disbursement to affected persons as soon as it is received in the Ministry’s accounts.
“As can be expected, the Foreign Ministry will hand over the entire funds as soon as we receive it in our accounts,” he added.
The donation comes at a time when several communities in Greater Accra and other parts of the country have been hit by flooding, with homes, businesses and livelihoods destroyed.
Government appreciates ECOWAS solidarity
On behalf of the Government of Ghana, the Foreign Minister expressed gratitude to ECOWAS for the gesture.”The Government of Ghana conveys boundless appreciation to ECOWAS for their solidarity and true African compassion,” he said.The Minister concluded his statement with “For God and Country.”Government is expected to coordinate with NADMO and the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to ensure the ECOWAS support reaches flood victims quickly.
