Ghana’s tallest man, 33-year-old Awuche, dies at 7 Feet 4 inches
Ghana’s tallest man, Awuche, has died at the age of 29 after battling health complications linked to gigantism.
He passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), where he had been receiving specialist treatment following a deterioration in his condition. Awuche stood at an extraordinary 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 metres).
A family source confirmed his passing to Graphic Online, adding that burial arrangements were underway in Tamale in line with Islamic customs.
Awuche, who hailed from Gambaga in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region, was initially treated at the Baptist Medical Centre (BMC) in Nalerigu before being transferred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for advanced medical care.
His condition drew nationwide attention after appeals were made for financial support to cover the cost of his treatment. Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama later stepped in to fully sponsor his medical care at the Tamale Teaching Hospital and had also expressed his willingness to fund specialist treatment abroad if necessary.
On July 11, 2026, Ibrahim Mahama’s aide, Rafik Mahama, announced that following a fresh medical assessment by specialists at TTH, doctors had decided against amputating Awuche’s left leg, contrary to an earlier recommendation made by the Baptist Medical Centre. He reiterated Ibrahim Mahama’s commitment to financing all aspects of Awuche’s treatment.
Awuche became a nationally recognised figure because of his exceptional height, earning him the title of Ghana’s tallest man. According to his family, he was not born with the condition but began experiencing abnormal growth at a young age, which was later diagnosed as gigantism.
His remarkable stature made him a well-known personality wherever he went, often drawing admiration and curiosity from the public. News of his passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from family, friends and Ghanaians across the country, with many expressing their condolences on social media.
