He borrowed recklessly and is hiding in the US – Ayariga demands Ofori-Atta returns to Ghana

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has called on the Minority in Parliament to support efforts to have former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta return to Ghana to account for his tenure in office.

Speaking during Thursday’s debate on the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, Mr Ayariga questioned the former minister’s absence from the country and urged lawmakers across the political divide to back calls for his return.

“Where is the man who put us in debt? Where is Ken Ofori-Atta? After borrowing recklessly and creating the debt, he has gone and is hiding in the United States of America. We must bring Ken Ofori-Atta back,” he said.

The Majority Leader argued that Mr Ofori-Atta should explain the financial decisions taken during his time as Finance Minister and be held accountable for his management of the economy.

“Ken Ofori-Atta should be brought back to account to the good people of Ghana for why he so grossly mismanaged our finances and left ordinary Ghanaians to struggle to fix the economy while he enjoys himself in the United States of America,” Mr Ayariga added.

Mr Ayariga made the remarks as Parliament continued debate on the government’s 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review.
